Volcano Vista – Eldorado, from Rio West (ABQ Journal)

The Hawks (17-8) blew this game open with a 10-run fourth inning — all after two outs — to rout the 13th-seeded Eagles 13-2.    Cameron Fite pitched well for No. 4 seed Volcano Vista in the win, and the Hawks will try to clinch their firstround series at 10 a.m. today.    “We’ve been battling (getting) two-out hits all season long, and then we get 10 of them today,” Volcano Vista coach Kevin Andersh said.    The game ended after five innings.

Volcano Vista rallies for District 1-5A title

Hawks score 4 in ninth to beat Rams
By James Yodice    Journal Staff Writer

A roundup of the last week in prep baseball for Rio West programs:

VOLCANO VISTA: The Hawks had four runs in the top of the ninth inning — off consecutive doubles by R.J. Alderete, Brock Sullivan and Andre Vigil — as Volcano Vista won the District 1-5A title with a 6-2 victory at Rio Rancho.    Volcano also swept two games from Cleveland last Saturday, 4-2 and 8-0. The opener went eight innings, and the Hawks rallied late to force extra innings. Vigil belted a two-run home run in the second game.    The Hawks (15-7, 6-1 in district) close out the regular season today with a 10 a.m. doubleheader at Cibola.

RIO RANCHO: The Rams (17-7, 4-3 in 1-5A) are at Cleveland for two games at 10 this morning.    Rio Rancho’s Brendan Wanchek pitched well in the loss to the Hawks, going eight solid innings.    The Rams took two games from Cibola last Saturday, 7-3 and 11-1.

CIBOLA: The Cougars (11-11, 3-4 in 1-5A) are coming off a 5-1 victory Tuesday over Cleveland as they prepare to play host to Volcano Vista today.    Trey Patterson tossed a fivehitter in Cibola’s win, and Casey Peery had three of the Cougars’ 10 hits.    Cibola could overtake Rio Rancho for second place in district, but only if the Cougars sweep Volcano Vista and the Rams get swept by Cleveland.

CLEVELAND: The Storm (11-13, 1-6) can only hope to improve its state seeding position today when Rio Rancho visits for two games.

VALLEY: The Vikings (13-11, 6-4 in district) locked up third place in District 5-5A on Thursday night, whipping Highland 13-0 behind the 2-hit performance of left-hander Steven Bishop. Davi Mondragon drove in three runs for the Vikings. Andrew Montoya doubled, tripled and had two RBIs.    Bishop in his previous start threw a five-inning perfect game last Saturday against West Mesa, a 10-0 victory.    The Vikings fell 9-3 to Rio Grande on Tuesday night, despite a 3-for-3 outing by Bo Coleman.

WEST MESA: The Mustangs (11-13, 5-5 in 5-5A) closed the regular season Thursday, losing 16-8 to Atrisco Heritage Academy.    West Mesa edged Albuquerque High 5-4 on Tuesday, as Marco Manjarrez hit a home run for the Mustangs.    He also homered in the loss to Atrisco.    ST. PIUS: The Sartans (15-6, 7-0 in district) have clinched the District 5-4A championship going into their doubleheader today at Albuquerque Academy.    St. Pius pounded Moriarty 13-3 on Tuesday to officially secure first place. There was no further information available on that game.

Wide-open race: All four teams have a shot at winning District 1-5A

Journal Staff Report

If there’s one thing the baseball coaches from District 1-5A are in complete agreement on, it’s the sheer unpredictability of this fourteam league.    Cleveland’s 14-5 victory over Rio Rancho on Tuesday opened the door for Volcano Vista to slide into first place by itself following a 7-3 victory over Cibola in the Hawks’ 2013 regular-season home finale.    The Hawks (12-7, 3-1 in 1-5A) scored all their runs in the first two innings — some their own doing, some with Cibola’s help.    One play in particular shed light on that duality, as Dylan Dudley’s two-run, bases-loaded single also led to a third run on a throwing error by the Cougars.    Chris Padilla and Brock Sullivan scored on Dudley’s hit, and Andre Vigil scored on the error.    “We had a couple of errors in those first two innings,” Cibola coach Ramon Gonzales said.    Cody Trujillo pitched extremely well for the Hawks, going four perfect innings before Cibola’s Drew Janis broke up the no hit bid with a single in the fifth.    The Cougars were rallying in the sixth, and had the bases loaded, trailing 7-2, with nobody out.    Volcano Vista reliever Brian Fox gave up a ground ball that scored one run, then induced a double play to escape further damage.    Volcano Vista is at Cleveland (11-10, 1-3 in 1-5A) at 10 a.m. today in a doubleheader.    Cibola (10-9, 2-2) visits Rio Rancho (15-6, 2-2) for two games, also at 10 this morning. The Rams beat the Cougars 8-5 last week.    “You know,” Gonzales said, “with our district, anybody can make a run here at the end. It’ll come down to that last day, no matter what.”

District begins; Rams respond/Showdown with Hawks is up next

Rio Rancho baseball coach Ron Murphy got the answer he was hoping for.

“I was definitely encouraged,” Murphy said after the Rams beat Cibola 8-5 on Tuesday in both teams’ District 1-5A opener.

Rio Rancho (14-4) ended a three-game losing streak that had Murphy concerned about how his team would respond against the Cougars.

His concerns were alleviated early, when the Rams scored four in the first inning on home runs from Brandon Garcia and Marcus Martinez.

“All of a sudden, district started, and that put the emergency back in their game and they finally started competing again,” Murphy said.

Today at 10 a.m., the Rams visit Volcano Vista (10-6) for the early lead in 1-5A.

“Right now, I think Volcano Vista is playing the best baseball — well, them and Sandia are playing the best baseball in the state,” Murphy said. “In order to win district, you have to go through Volcano Vista right now.”

The Hawks ripped Cleveland 17-7 in six innings on Tuesday. Dylan Dudley homered and drove in five runs to pace Volcano Vista, which won its fifth game in a row.

chris Padilla and Daniel Herrera had three hits apiece for the Hawks, who had 15 as a team.

Marcos Travers belted a three-run homer for the Storm.

Cibola (8-8) meets Cleveland (10-8) in a doubleheader at 10 a.m. today at Cibola. In the Cougars’ loss to Rio Rancho, Casey Perry, Drew Janis and Phil Trujillo all had two hits.
